January 8, 2016: Often we have money in IRA accounts that you don't want to transfer to a bank just to get a few tenths of a percent more interest on a term CD.  For example, the best rate available today is 1.05% HERE which is fine for taxable accounts where you can easily move your money, but if you have a large part of your asset allocation at a brokerage like Fidelity, then getting their brokerage CDs can make sense.  With the Fed expected to raise rates this year, its make sense to do a 3, 6, 9 and 12 month CD ladder with a CD maturing every 3 months.  As each matures, buy a new 1 year CD so you have 1yr CDs maturing every 3 months.

Currently, you can get 0.45%, 0.50% and 0.55% for 1, 2 and 3 month CDs, respectively.  The top rate for a 10-year CD is 2.85%.  Scroll down for more rates and a graph of historical CD Rates
