December 18, 2014:  This graphic from page 26 of the December issue of "AARP Bulletin" shows donations to charity as a percentage of adjusted gross income for tax year 2012.  

Deductions larger than the average for your location are red flags for IRS Audits.  If your deductions for charity are well above the average for your state, then you should take special care to carefully document your gifts so your deductions are not disallowed if audited by the IRS.
