May 22, 2018:  The tables below show the United States Federal  Income tax brackets and marginal tax rates for the  2018 tax year.  Last year, the top Federal marginal tax rate was 39.6%. This year the top rate is 1.6% lower at 37.0%, the personal exemption was been eliminated, and the standard deduction was increased. 

On December 22, 2017 President Donald Trump signed the GOP tax plan called the "Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017" into law.  I summarized the changes for individuals and corporations in an article here called "

Note: Each tax rate applies to a range of income called a tax bracket. Each tax rate applies to a specific range of taxable income. Taxable income is total income after various deductions have been subtracted.

Standard Deductions. For 2018, the standard deduction is:
  • Married filing jointly or qualifying widow(er) . . . . . $24,000
  • Head of household . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $18,000
  • Single or Married filing separately . . . . . . . . . . . .  $12,000
If you are over 65 or blind, an additional $1,300 for each ($2,600 total.) See Note 1 below for link to details.

The personal exemption for tax year 2018 was eliminated.
